Job Description - Wine Consultant

A professional Wine Consultant has expertise in the following skills pertaining to wine;

- A knowledge of the history and geography of wine

- Technical awareness of Viticulture, (growing grapes)

- Technical awareness of  Viniculture, (making wine)

- Knowledge of the wine market- buying and selling

- Knowledge of  current and past vintage prices

- The sourcing of wine from producers, importers, wholesalers and retailers

- Wine and food compatibility and matching

- A good nose and palate to distinguish and discern wine aroma, flavour, character etc

The occupation of Wine Consultant involves assisting and servicing people who require the following services;

-Local wholesalers wishing to import wines

-Independent retailers wishing to source rare or specialised wines

-Restaurateurs requiring assistance with wine list creation

-Members of the public wanting to buy privately or from auction

Other areas where the professional wine consultant may be involved are;

-Writing press columns or magazine editorials

-Staff training in Restaurants, retail shops etc

-Conducting wine classes for recognised training courses

-Consultation to the actual winery or winemaker on market trends, consumer tastes etc

The extent of a Wine Consultant’s expertise is always developing. They can have a very focused knowledge in a particular field or a broader, less detailed and specialised.

With the diversity and scope of different wines from all over the world and new products and styles emerging every year it can be said that no-one could become the ultimate expert – it all comes down to an individual’s taste anyway. Wine Consultants are also sometimes appointed to advise growers and vineyards on a wide range of issues involved in the wine industry including purchasing equipment, the rules and regulations of winemaking and marketing. A wine consultant should have a vast knowledge of different methods of wine making, different tastes and different wine regions. They should have experience of working at all levels in the wine trade. A good wine consultant who has earned the respect of many customers can earn a lot of money in the industry.

Training & Qualifications

A wine consultant could start from the bottom of the industry and work their way up or they could attend various courses on offer including degree programs.  They should also taste and learn about as many wines as possible to increase their knowledge!

Personal Qualities

To become a wine consultant you must have a great love of wine and an extensive knowledge of different wines and the wine industry and you should have good communication skills.
