Job Description - Theatre Production Manager

There are many different careers in the exciting world of theatre. To create a good theatrical production it is important not only to have good actors and actresses but good production managers and assistants. Many people are involved in producing a theatrical play including the director, stage manager, wardrobe assistants, set designers, lighting designers and box office staff.

Theatre Producer

A Theatre Producer is in charge of and oversees the whole theatre production. It is the producer’s responsibility to find a location for the play, and to pay for all the overheads involved.

Training & Qualifications

Many Producers gained experience by studying for relevant qualifications in Stage Management and working their way up to becoming Producers.

Personal Qualities

A Theatre Producer needs to have a good business sense, ability to manage others, tact, patience and be highly motivated.

 Theatre Director

The Theatre Director is responsible for the hiring of actors and production staff. The director holds auditions, and directs rehearsals. The Director works closely with the producer and the playwrights.

Training & Qualifications

Most Directors probably started their careers as actors, or had an interest in acting at college or university. Some Directors gain qualifications by studying a Directors course at drama school.

Personal Qualities


A Theatre Director needs to be a team leader with good communication skills and the ability to cope under stress.

Stage Manager

The Stage Manager oversees the costumes, lighting, sets, and scene changes. Their job is to ensure the production is smooth and organised.

Training & Qualifications

Qualifications are a very helpful start for a career in Stage Management; very few people make it without them.

If you would like a career in Stage Management, it would be a good idea to study for a diploma course at drama school. Most courses run for two years and are full time. There are also some 3-year university degree courses available.

Personal Qualities

To be a Theatre Stage Manager you need have a keen interest in the theatre, be artistic with a good eye for detail, and the ability to stay calm and focused.
