Job Description - Journalist


Being a journalist can be very exciting and glamorous, but it takes a lot of hard work, determination and stamina to become successful and can be poorly paid at first. The job title journalist can cover a variety of careers including Reporter, Sub-Editor and Editor. A Reporters job is to find out information and write articles for Newspapers, Magazines and Television etc. A Reporter can cover any news story from local news and events to political and world news. A Sub-Editors job is to alter, adjust, shorten and sometimes rewrite articles already written by the reporter. The Editor is responsible for the publications content and recruitment. A journalists job can be very varied and exciting as each day is different but the job can involve long and irregular hours especially when tight deadlines are involved.

Training & Qualifications

A good way to begin your career in journalism would be to apply to the editor of a regional or local newspaper. You must have 5 GCSE’s one GCSE must be in English, this is the minimum of qualifications as most people who manage to get a trainee placement have been to university or have some A-levels.

Personal Qualities

To become a Journalist you should possess good research skills be observant, accurate, naturally curious and have the ability to work under pressure.
