Job Description - Hairdresser

Becoming a professional and successful hairdresser is hard work and you need to work your way up from the bottom. Being a hairdresser means spending most of the day standing up and a lot of the time with your hands in water. There are no short cuts! First you will need to start by washing customers hair, sweeping up and learning how to handle equipment. To become a hairdresser you will need to learn various techniques, such as perming, highlighting, and styling. Most hairdressers work in salons and with hard work it is possible to own your own salon. Some hairdressers have specialities e.g. in ethnic hairstyles or male/female hairdressing, and some work as mobile hairdressers visiting clients in their own homes.

Training & Qualifications

Although qualifications are not essential to become a hairdresser, they are recommended. Many colleges offer NVQ/SVQ’s qualifications, which cover the basics to more advanced and technical areas of hairdressing.

Personal Qualities

Hard working, creative, sociable with the ability to chat and make customers at ease and an eye for detail.
