Job Description - Disc Jockey (DJ)

A Disc Jockey is employed to provide music to a variety of venues including nightclubs, pubs, discos, private parties and radio stations. DJ ing has become very popular in recent years and last year alone over 100000 turntables were sold in the UK!

A radio DJ’s job may involve selecting and introducing music based on their listeners tastes, taking listeners requests and interviewing musicians.

A mobile DJ may provide the music for wedding receptions, parties, company events and also sometimes provide karaoke, games and other activities.

Dance music has become a global phenomenon. Club DJ,s can earn a very good wage and may get to travel worldwide. Some DJs work with MCs (Master of Ceremonies) who provide the DJ with vocal support and entertain the audience whilst the DJ concentrates on playing the music. DJs have been credited for keeping vinyl records alive and often scratch and mix their music for a unique sound.

Qualifications & Training

If you are thinking of becoming a DJ then a strong passion for music and an interest in a variety of different types of music is a good starting point. You may wish to specialise in a particular area e.g funk, garage, rap, hip-hop, or pop. Understanding basic electronics is useful for minor repairs of equipment. Many professional DJs are self-taught, as formal qualifications are not necessary to become a DJ. Many professional DJs started out their careers by volunteering their services at local radio stations, clubs and friends parties. It would be a good idea to compile a demonstration tape to show off your Disc Jockeying skills to potential employers.
